DEXA Scan
Bone densitometry (DEXA) is a quick and painless X-ray that measures bone density. It is most often used to detect osteoporosis or assess your risk for developing fractures. If you’re being treated for bone loss, a follow-up DEXA can show if the therapy is effective.
DEXA is performed by appointment only and requires a physician order.
Preparing for Your Bone Densitometry Exam
- The DEXA procedure takes approximately 10-20 minutes. During the exam, an X-ray technologist will position you on a padded table and ask you to remain very still. The DEXA equipment will scan one or more areas of bone.
- Eat and drink normally on the day of your exam.
- Tell your physician or X-ray technologist if you are or may be pregnant.
- Please register 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment and bring the physician order to your appointment.
