Preadmission Testing
All patients having a surgery that requires anesthesia will need pre-screening in one of our Preadmission Testing (PAT) departments. This screening helps us determine your fitness for a safe surgery. We also use this visit to answer any questions you may have and let you know what to expect before and after surgery, including how to manage pain or nausea, and what changes to a surgery site are worrisome as you recover. If you do not attend your PAT visit, your surgery will likely be cancelled or postponed.
To prepare for your PAT visit:
- Arrive a few minutes before your appointment time to sign in.
- You do not need to fast.
- Bring a list of all medications you take, including dose and how often taken. If easier for you, bring the bottles to your appointment.
- Bring copies of Advance Directives (such as a living will or power of attorney).
- If you have a cardiac device (pacemaker or defibrillator), bring your device ID card. Your device needs to have been checked within six months prior to surgery.
- If you are accompanying a patient who has a legal guardian, bring legal documents.
- Write down any questions you have.
